Choosing the right size of implant

It's best to make selecting the right implant size a one-time decision because additional surgeries mean additional risks. Most patients are very satisfied with their breast augmentation outcomes, but some women elect to have a second surgery to change the size of their implants.

At our La Jolla/San Diego area practice, women seek breast augmentation for a variety of reasons apart from feeling that their breasts are not large enough. They may be seeking to:
  • Balance the size of uneven breasts
  • Regain lost volume after pregnancy
  • Acquire a better proportion between their breasts and their body
We consult carefully with our patients to determine what size is appropriate and sustainable by their unique skeletal structure and skin tone. A thorough examination by a licensed and experienced cosmetic surgeon is the only way to ensure that you will receive the best implant size for your frame and skin type, but that doesn't mean you have to wait until your consultation to start investigating what you might like in terms of results.

There are two basic techniques you can use before your consultation to get a basic idea of what you might be looking for. First, try to find images of women's breasts that you consider to be attractive. You won't be able to achieve the exact look of any of these women, but they can serve as a starting place to begin discussion. Second, you can select a bra that approximates the size you think you want to achieve. Then, use rice, couscous, or birdseed in a stocking to fill up the bra. Wear it around. Try on several outfits with it. See how you feel and adjust as necessary.

Remember, though, the only way to really pick the right size for your breast augmentation is in consultation with a trained and experienced cosmetic surgeon. If you or a loved one are in the La Jolla or San Diego areas and are considering of breast augmentation surgery, please call our office at 800.715.5052 to schedule a breast augmentation consultation.
