Understanding Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

January 18th, 2012

Surgery for cosmetic or reconstructive purposes can do a lot to help with a person’s self image. There are procedures for almost any situation, and whether you are rebuilding something that was damaged through injury or disease, or choosing a procedure that is strictly elective, there are many choices and options for beautifying and reconstructing the body.

Cosmetic Procedures

Studies continue to show that more and more people in the United States approve of plastic surgery in general, and between 2009 and 2010 there was almost a 9% increase in the total number of procedures performed. However, even with the growing acceptance of cosmetic surgery, there are still many people that don’t understand what it encompasses and what it can do for the patient.

Cosmetic procedures and strictly elective, and they can include breast augmentation, liposuction, abdominoplasty, rhinoplasty, facelifts and other contouring procedures. A lot of the recent growth in the industry though, is due to the prevalence of new, non-surgical procedures (such as Botox injections). Patients are now able to get some great results without having to go under the knife. The procedure is finished quickly, and recovery time is reduced.

Patients who are considering these types of procedures can benefit greatly from the results. Many of us perceive certain flaws about our bodies, and while this isn’t a cure-all, plastic surgery does offer one way to make a lasting change that can improve self-image and self-esteem.

Reconstructive Surgery

The people we deal with who are looking for plastic surgery in San Diego, California are either trying to correct some of their perceived flaws, or restore the form and function of something that was damaged through injury or illness. These types of injuries can do more than just physical damage, and it can be very hard to accept what has happened. These types of procedures, though, aren’t necessarily about building a self image, but restoring what was lost.

These surgeries are used for repairing things that have permanently affected the body. This could include birth defects along with the results of traumatic injuries. There are a lot of options available for different problems, from breast reconstruction or reduction to surgeries to correct maladies on the hands and feet. Facial surgeries can correct breathing problems or defects like a cleft lip, and, of course, injury repair can help individuals who have been severely burned or cut.

Advancing the Industry

As we continue working in this area we are continuing to see new developments that change the way we think about both cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries. Whether it is the new, non-invasive surgeries or new tools that help us restore someone to their previous appearance, we can see the industry advancing quickly, and there are always new opportunities to provide the services people want and need.

Dr. Reza Sadrian Plastic Surgeon in San DiegoDr. Reza Sadrian has over 20 years of surgical experience and the distinct honor of being one of the only plastic surgeons in the country to hold dual certifications in plastic and reconstructive surgery as well as oral and maxillofacial surgery. It is this extensive experience that gives him such a unique perspective when dealing with complex facial cosmetic surgery issues and that makes him such a valuable part of our team of La Jolla plastic surgeons.

Dr. Sadrian says that his training has given him a unique understanding of cosmetic surgery. “My strong medical training and my love of art contribute to every procedure I do. My additional training and experience in oral and maxillofacial surgery, reconstructive plastic surgery, as well as treating trauma patients has truly enhanced my cosmetic surgery skills.”

Dr. Sadrian is a diplomat of the American Board of Plastic Surgery and an active member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, as well as the California Society of Plastic Surgeons and San Diego International Society of Plastic Surgeons. I help them bring out the internal beauty they have. What other profession can be this rewarding?”

Since each patient is so unique, Dr. Sadrian treats each procedure individually. One of the things that make Dr. Sadrian stand out is the time that he takes to listen to each of his patients. Before making any recommendations about procedures, Dr. Sadrian is careful to listen to the goals of each of his patients. He also engages in extensive follow-up visits to make sure that each patient is adjusting and to listen to any concerns that he or she may have.

Preparing for the Holidays : Rejuvenating Treatments

November 16th, 2011

Many of our clients receive a variety of non-surgical, rejuvenating treatments that do not require surgery or long recovery periods. These include “injectibles” such as Botox® Costmetic, Juvederm™, Restylane®, Perlane® and many other facial enhancing products.

These injectible treatments help patients look their best and achieve their goals by relaxing facial wrinkling, filling in noticeable lines and plumping the skin surrounding the lines. Botox results last 3-4 months, Restylane results 4-6 months, Perlane results 5-6 months and Juvederm results 9 months to one year.

Additionally, chemical or enzyme peels are light facial peels that treat the surface of the skin with physical dermaplanting, alpha hydroxy acids, and cryogenic therapy. This triggers the skin to renew itself and release impacted debris from clogged pores. Following this painless procedure, patients return to work the same day.

Another option is microdermabrasion. This procedure, which resurfaces skin using a stream of fine crystals, requires no downtime and no pain. Many people have postponed treatment for minor skin problems such as sun damage, acne scars or fine wrinkles because they are nervous about having a chemical or laser peel. Microdermabrasion is a safe, painless alternative, and produces smoother and softer skin from the very first treatment.

Our Visia Photo Analysis Consult Room

Using microscopically abrasive crystals under highly controlled pressure to gently remove damaged cells from the outer layer of you skin, a microdermabrasion treatment takes only 40 minutes and patients don’t need to schedule and time off for recovery. Because each individual’s skin is unique, facial rejuvenation treatment decisions will depend upon your skin type, bone structure, medical history and desired outcome. We work with a licensed esthetician in our office to provide a skin evaluation prior to determining the most effective treatments for each candidate.

Furthermore, there is a new state-of-the-art laser machine called the Sciton XC laser that we utilize in our practice to perform a Micro Laser “Fresh Peel.” This technologically advanced treatment removes a minute layer of damaged skin to improve texture and provide a more youthful appearance. It provides superior results because it can be administered with great precision of depth.

During the Micro Laser “Fresh Peel”, a beam is scanned over a treatment area to remove a very thin layer of skin, which takes with it damaged cells. As the skin heals, fresh cells grow to reveal healthier looking skin, reduced wrinkles, minimized scars and improved color evenness. The result is skin that looks vibrant and glowing. Although there is minimal down time of one to two days, the results are extraordinary.
