Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery) Questions
Nose surgery (technically known as a rhinoplasty and sometimes called a "nose job") can help men and women whose noses make them feel self-conscious about their appearance. Sometimes, people feel that their noses are too large. Unattractive shapes, such as a bump in the bridge or a large, fleshy tip, are common complaints. Sometimes people have a crooked nose as a result of a facial injury. Other people have difficulty breathing as a result of the shape of their nose's internal structure. Nose surgery can correct all these problems and more.
Plastic surgeons Dr. John Smoot and Dr. Wendell Smoot III have over 50 years of plastic surgery experience helping people achieve facial harmony with a better nose shape. They are both board certified in plastic surgery. They are active members in both major plastic surgery organizations, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Finally, they are Fellows of the American College of Surgeons, an honor reserved for a relatively small number of surgeons in the United States. These are all signs of the experience and skill they can bring to help you get the best possible results from your nose surgery.
To learn more about how personable they are, how well they will treat you, and how well they will listen to your concerns about your nose shape, schedule a consultation at Cosmetic Plastic Surgery of La Jolla today. We offer evening and weekend consultations for your convenience.
During your consultation, Dr. Smoot will closely examine the anatomy of your nose and listen to your cosmetic goals. He will talk to you about what kind of results you can expect, and show you before and after pictures of previous patients to give you an idea about results you may be able to get. We also use Mirror Imaging software by Canfield to give you a good idea what your new nose will look like. However, it is impossible to guarantee any specific results.
Nose surgery is performed under either local anesthesia with conscious sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the amount of reshaping necessary and other factors. No matter which option we use, you will feel no discomfort during the procedure, and most likely will not remember much about it. Whenever possible, we make incisions inside the nose only. Sometimes it is necessary to make an incision in the skin between the nostrils. The procedure typically takes 1-2 hours to complete.
After your nose surgery, you will wear a nasal splint for about a week after the surgery. You will likely experience some discomfort that can be managed with pain medication.
Immediately after your nose surgery, you will have visible swelling and bruising, which will subside within two or three weeks. When it does, you will see some of the results of your surgery. Final results of your nose surgery may take longer to become visible, as long as six months for some people.
Achieving the best possible appearance for your face is sometimes very complicated. Sometimes changing other aspects of your facial appearance can improve the results from your nose surgery. Chin implants can be used to help bring your facial features into balance.
